Do you often eat on the run or are you looking for a nutritious, fast breakfast? Maybe on a diet? Meal replacement shakes can be a nutritious substitute for a breakfast on the run. There are so many shakes out there to choose from, where do you start?
Choosing a Shake
When I make a decision to start or to try something new, (I’m not talking about a different color of fingernail polish or a new food), I’m not the person that jumps right in. My process is to check it out. When the decision means a change to my lifestyle or diet, I don’t take this lightly so I take a close look and if I’m looking at food or drink, the first place I go to is the label. I want to know how many ingredients it takes to make this shake, and what the ingredients are!
One other thing, can I pronounce the ingredient name? You’ve heard the saying; If you can’t pronounce the ingredient, you probably don’t want to eat or drink it!
Before I begin, the BEST choice of a beneficial, nutritious meal is a home cooked meal! There is NO substitute for that. But sitting down to a home cooked meal isn’t always available to us in our busy lives. Between holding down a full time job, being a mom, some days a family may not be home together until late in the day. This leaves little time for eating a meal together, let alone prepping for the meal!
So for those of us that sleep until the last minute and need a meal on the go, what’s the best choice? Meal replacement shakes. When investigating the best choice a person can read many meal replacement shake reviews. I encourage you to read different reviews, be open to different opinions so you can make an educated decision. In a moment I’ll give you mine, and tell you how I went about choosing.
What Do The Ingredients Tell You?
If you can’t pronounce the ingredient you probably don’t want to eat or drink it! Think about what this is telling us? Most natural foods we eat we have no difficulty pronouncing them like apple or peanut, but have you ever eaten a selenomethionne? One of many ingredients it takes to make a processed food. Or better yet, how many ingredients does it take to make one little shake?
Before trying, and loving, my shake of choice, I looked at a lot of labels and I’m going to share a few labels with you. First, I’m unveiling my favorite meal replacement shake: IDLife SHAKE. I love it, and the ingredients are as simple as the shake itself! Only seven ingredients, all easy to pronounce and natural!
The shakes I looked at were:
My Comparison, …
Below I will show each of the above products with their label. If you can get past the paragraph of ingredients, then I check out fat content and which type, the amount of sodium, carbs, sugars, …, you get the point.
What do I see in the labels? Well, first impression is the writing underneath the bold word; INGREDIENTS. I can’t help but notice that all but IDLife SHAKE have paragraph long ingredient lists. That tells me there are ingredients listed that are lab made and not recognized by the human body as real food.
Looking through the Nutrition Facts, IDLife SHAKE may run behind, but I have to take into account how the nutrition was packed in there and where it comes from? The label has the appearance of a healthy product and they claim to provide the essential vitamins and minerals, but that’s not always true. Many of the ingredients come from ultra processed foods and that is difficult for the body to break down. A person may not be getting the nutrition displayed.
I found this SHAKE a few years ago and absolutely love it! When looking at nutrition, it is non-GMO and free of gluten, soy, artificial hormones, lactose, casein, and MSG. I like both the vanilla and chocolate, but prefer the vanilla. If you look at the label above, their SHAKE only has seven ingredients! When I see that, I feel much more comfortable that the nutrition is natural and not from a processed source AND they offer a vegan option which is difficult to find.
When I fell in love with this shake was when my late husband was fighting cancer. Every morning I would prepare a smoothie using the IDlife SHAKE and adding a banana or blueberries. Adding Greek yogurt just tops it off. If you’ve ever been around a person fighting cancer, eating can be a chore, but I knew that my husband was, if nothing else, getting the nutrition needed that his medication was stripping away.
Today, when my youngest hears the Vita-Mix turn on, he magically appears waiting for his. I love this because it’s healthy and his body likes it too!
This doesn’t have to be made with a blender of any kind. When on trips I’ll take convenient packets and mix with what I can find; water, almond or cashew milk. Be creative!
As you can probably tell, I highly recommend the IDLife SHAKE. They are a fairly new company, around for 4-5 years and growing quickly. I am fortunate to have met the founder and some of their key players. I have even seen where their products are processed, their lab, and believe this is a top-notch company offering products without lab made enhancements. AND THEY WORK!
As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to read this! If you have a thought, or want to ask a question, please feel free to leave me a message below. These are just my opinions, I could be wrong.
