I’ve just spent the last hour at the grocery store. I am going to be the best mom ever when I get home! I’ll just eat one of those bakery cookies while I drive home. Because, of course, I can’t wait until I get home — Why?
Best Mom Ever!
I have two teenage sons, and I truly believe I get the most love and adoration when I come home from the grocery store! The only chore they don’t mind is helping to carry in the groceries, because that’s when they scope out what I bought. After all the bags are in and they know the bounty, grab a bunch of “something” and disappear into their rooms, not to leave until the next call for food. Now most people would say that’s just a teenage boy, they’re always hungry – and I agree! I also know that there is a strong desire to get all excited and giddy when fresh new food arrives, like drugs! OMG – Why am I addicted to food?
Can The Food We Eat Be Addictive?
Crazy concept, right? Being addicted to food! But take a moment and think about it,. .
The soil at farms is greatly void of the “stuff” it takes to produce healthy, tasty produce. That is an issue because if it doesn’t taste good then consumers aren’t going to buy it and that’s not an option. The goal is to have tasty produce that is also colorful and will have a decent shelf life. Produce doesn’t naturally come that way. We’re looking at a specific chemical for growth, appearance, taste and longevity. How is that accomplished? I can tell you it’s not a natural process!
Some chemicals can cause chronic reactions such as cancer. Dyes which are used in our food to make them more visually appealing, were discovered to have many carcinogens. The FDA banned many of these, but now 10 are only allowed in our food which means there are still 10 possible carcinogens still out there.
Our food isn’t as robustly flavorful as it used to be, or, do we need more to be satisfied? Artificial flavorings can solve that issue. It can take hundreds of different chemicals to make just one artificial flavor. There are artificial flavors in bacon of all things! There are recent studies that suggest artificial flavorings could change some behaviors.
What Can You Do?
My son and I went to the movies and as soon as the door opened the most wonderful smell hit — pop corn.
The first thing to do, and what I’m striving to accomplish with this website, is to be informed. Knowledge is power, and without knowledge we’re all sheep following what’s put in front of our face- without opinion. It’s my intention to share bits of knowledge that can make our lives healthier and happier.
I would suggest be aware of product labels on food, not just the Nutrition Facts, but get familiar with the ingredients.
- The ingredients listed first are the most predominant.
- Sugars listed in the Nutrition Facts are naturally occurring. Check the ingredient list for other sweetening chemicals used such as aspartame, which contains formaldehyde. In 1987 the EPA classified this as a possible human carcinogen.
- Buy foods with as short an ingredient list as possible.
- Be aware of fake sweeteners such as aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, .
- Be aware of the serving size when checking total calories.
I Got This!
The most important thing that you can do for yourself and those you love is to be aware.
In every area of our life that’s what it takes, to be aware! Stop assuming something is healthy just because the label says it’s “Fat Free,” or that it tastes as good as real butter, or turkey bacon is healthier. Folks, let’s use some common sense- read labels, educate yourselves and take care of yourselves.
What if: we could beat chronic illnesses just by changing our diet?
This is just my opinion, I could be wrong! Please leave a comment, share what you know!
