One simple phrase that takes on many variations of how to live healthy. I’m going to offer up my version today!
Suzette’s Version of Healthy Today
So many ways to interpret the concept of “Healthy Living Today!” One person’s point of view may be to begin an exercise regimen, or to go on a diet, to start a deep cleanse and quit eating meat, …… I can go down this road forever! My start point of healthy living today is to begin removing toxins from my home!
I began this site talking about our food and how it’s devolved from our original and natural way of eating. I’ve also talked about the possibilities of getting sick from our household cleaners, or even chemicals that are in dry-cleaning solutions which transfer to your clothing. Remember my talking about our skin is our largest origin and chemicals that come in contact with your skin will be absorbed?
Are you familiar with the chemical formaldehyde? This is but one of the chemicals in dry cleaning solutions that can transfer to you through your skin. It is used as a preservative in funeral homes and laboratories. It is also a preservative in some of our foods, and in some soaps and cleaning products, … .
How to Begin, …
“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Somebody said that way before me but that reflects my process towards living healthy.
So many first bites that can greatly improve your life in the big picture, like switching your bread to sourdough or pumpernickel. When you finish your window cleaner, rinse it out and re-fill it with a mixture of vinegar and water. That simple move doesn’t make a big change, (or any change), to your way of life but you’re removing grains that we’re not designed to eat and removing the toxins that are absorbed through touch or even simply smelling it!
My thought process is this; I want to begin with my long term health because if I don’t I may not be here long term! Take a moment and think about what I just said; Begin with your long term health because if you don’t you may not be here long term!
Let that sink in.
My First Bites!
From an early age, I have experienced plenty cancer. Personally I have only had the scare of a skin cancer that was removed during a biopsy over 30 years ago. The contacts that I’ve had with cancer, close up and personal, were with my grandfather when I was in elementary school, my mom, my father-in-law and most recently my husband.
I may be giving away my age here, but cancer has invaded my family since it was a fairly rare occurrence. That was also the time when if you were given the prognosis of cancer then it was time to get your affairs in order and start saying your goodbyes! Logic tells me that what is the use of a beautiful, lean body if you’re not going to be around to enjoy it? What is the reason for a diet or vitamin if you don’t remove any toxins from your life? If the toxins are still in your life, in abundance, then how long will the glory of a 60lb weight loss and a new body last?
My next steps were simple:
- Stopped coloring my hair
- Switched out my deodorant for one without aluminum
- Stopped drinking tap water and bought a new water filter for my refrigerator
- Stopped drinking diet sodas, greatly reduced the amount of sodas I drink (I am human)
- Stopped eating corn
This was all I did at first, but that small amount of change cut out many toxins! That small change cut many chances for possible illness or even a chronic illness may have been reduced just because of a few simple changes. Now that you’re comfortable with those changes, make another some more. Take another bite until that elephant’s gone!
From That Point, I Continued to Reduce Toxins
Some of the next switches I made were our laundry detergent, bath soap, less use of the microwave, toothpaste, … Just about everything around us could be switched for a less toxic version. But that’s life as we know it today, chemicals in most all products to offer some kind of benefit. Personally I feel it’s a slap in the face and a bit of a let down. The benefit we receive is a longer shelf life for what we buy or a deeper clean with the use of the newest chemical. As our quest for more produce, more profit continues to grow we’ve completely lost any quest for more health or more thought for the person buying and using the product!
Over time, I have switched out probably 80% of my household cleaners to cleaners with less or no toxins. I’ve replaced body wash, shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, just about everything! I feel very comfortable with this and I can afford it! I have found companies that produce toxin free products that are extremely affordable and my greatest hope is that I am ingraining into my boy’s minds name brands that keep the health concerns of their customers as a priority more than the profit that their company can make at the detriment of their customer’s health!

From This Point On
I’m happy with the choices that I have been making when deciding what to bring into my house. One by one I have been replacing product and food with organic, non-toxic items. I can’t always afford organic, but that’s OK because I know that I have my home as non-toxic as possible. From my air fresheners to dishwasher soap to the lotion we use after a shower. I feel very good in the fact that I am doing what I can to reduce the toxins in my home. Mine and my son’s allergy are down, I don’t worry when my dog licks the floor after it’s been mopped. It’s truly a great feeling to know that I have lessened the chances of illness for me and my family!
Thank you for taking the time to read this and know that I would appreciate any response, or ideas from you!
